OHIO MASSAGE THERAPY LICENSURE EXAM CLASSIFICATION OF QUESTIONS

The breakdown of categories of questions on each part of the exam are based on recommendations made several years ago by the Ohio Council of Massage Therapy Schools.  The Medical Board, with the advice of the Massage Therapy Advisory Committee (MTAC), authorized the use of these categories as the basis of the licensure exam.

In October 2002, the State Medical Board of Ohio acted on the advice of the MTAC, in consultation with several members of the Council of Schools, to increase the number of questions on the licensure exam.  Beginning in June 2003, each part of the MT licensure exam will consist of 110 questions, of which 100 will count toward the applicant's score.

Below you will find the breakdown of each part of the exam by topic area, a brief statement of what is included in each topic area, and the approximate number of questions that will be asked in each category.  The Medical Board, through the MTAC, and in conjunction with the Council of Schools, will be reviewing the topics that should be included in the exam, and any changes will be reported here.  But any changes will not take effect until the June 2004 exam at the earliest so that the schools can be given sufficient notice.

The Board has identified the texts to which each of the questions is indexed.  All of the A&P exam, for example, is referenced to the Tortora text (Tortora and Grabowski, 10th edition).  For the massage portion of the exam, we have created a color code to indicate which texts are used to reference each of the areas.  In addition, certain legal and ethical issues are referenced to other materials, and those materials are provided by hyperlink in the grid below.

Finally, MTAC, the Board's Examination Evaluation and Preparation Committee and the school representatives who attended the January 2003 MTAC meeting, identified the sections of the Kellogg text from which exam questions may be taken.  NO OTHER PARTS OF KELLOGG WILL BE USED FOR THE EXAM.  The portions of Kellogg from which exam questions will be taken are the sections covered on pages 13-101.  The section titles are:

  • Structures especially concerned in massage

  • The physiological effects of massage

  • The therapeutic applications of massage

  • The procedures of massage

  • Joint movements
