Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Renewal

License Renewal

Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) are required to renew their licenses biennially in order to maintain an active certificate to practice. The Board utilizes a “staggered renewal” process for its licensees. It is based on the first letter of the last name. See the staggered renewal chart here.

Ohio licenses may be renewed online. Online renewals are processed daily. Weekend renewals are processed on Mondays or the next business day. You may view your renewal status online here.

When you are ready to start the online renewal process, go to https://license.ohio.gov and follow the online instructions. Use the computer-generated User ID and Password included in the online renewal notice sent to you (mailed 6 months prior to license expiration date).  For online renewal, you will need the following items:

  • Complete address information for both your home and principal place of practice. You will be asked to designate one of these addresses as your official mailing address.

  • Your Social Security number.

  • Your email address for confirmation notice.

  • A valid credit card - Visa, MasterCard or Discover to complete the payment of your online renewal.

  • Physicians, if you have entered into a collaboration agreement with an advanced practice nurse, the name and license type for the nurse are needed.

  • You must have completed all required CME hours three (3) months prior to expiration date.

NOTE: If you cannot complete the process during your session, simply exit the program. The system will save what you have done and allow you to log back on at a later time to continue.

Continuing Education

All physicians registering for each renewal must complete at least 100 hours of CME (40 category 1 and 60 category 2) and comply with the CME requirements. Physicians who are currently not working or retired must complete CME requirements if they wish to renew their license.

No provisions exist between Ohio and other states for reciprocity of CME licensure requirements for renewal.

CME Hours Required to Maintain an Ohio License

  • To be eligible for renewal, you must have completed 100 CME hours. The CME program consists of two categories, Category 1 and Category 2. A minimum of 40 hours must be earned in Category 1 and a maximum of 60 hours may be earned in Category 2. You may earn all 100 CME hours in Category 1.

  • Your CME requirements must be completed three (3) months prior to expiration date. If you received your initial license or restored your Ohio license within a renewal cycle, your hours may be prorated.

  • Each completed week of AOA approved internship, residency or fellowship training counts as one CME Category 1 credit hour (i.e. one year of training equals 50 Category 1 CME hours).

Submitting my CME

On the renewal application you are asked to attest to completion of the required CME hours. The State Medical Board of Ohio audits a percentage of practitioners during each renewal cycle for random audit. Please do not submit proof of CME unless you receive an audit notice from the Board. Ohio Administrative Code requires practitioners to retain their CME records for two renewal cycles (at least 4 years).
