Doctor of Medicine General Licensure Information
In order to practice medicine in Ohio, an individual must be licensed and maintain a current license by the State Medical Board. Ohio has licensed physicians since the inception of the Medical Board in 1896. Thousands of physician applications are processed annually. In each case, the Board conducts a thorough evaluation of basic medical credentials, employment or work history, malpractice history and any criminal or disciplinary history.
Processing time is generally 10-12 weeks. Applications with affirmative answers or with criminal records reports will take additional time. License applications are initially reviewed by licensure staff within 30 days of receipt of a completed application. Applicants will be notified by mail of any missing information. All applications must be approved by the State Medical Board. Once the application is approved, the applicant will receive a wallet card and wall certificate in approximately 2 weeks.
