The National Consensus Project for Quality Palliative Care (NCP), a consortium of five leading U.S.-based palliative care organizations, has developed Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care. The guidelines address the needs of health care professionals who care for patients with advanced, chronic or life-threatening illnesses, as well as the needs of patients' families.

The guidelines describe eight different practice "domains," and offer detailed descriptions of appropriate means for addressing each domain. The eight domains are comprised of Structure and Process of Care, Physical, Psychological and Psychiatric, Social, Spiritual, Religious and Existential, Cultural, The Imminently Dying Patient and Ethics and Law.
