Obtaining a medical license and being certified as a medical specialist is two different and separate processes. State boards of medicine or boards of medical examiners are the legal authority that license physicians to practice medicine and surgery, osteopathic medicine and surgery, and podiatric medicine and surgery. It is a mandatory legal requirement for a physician to have a medical license from each state in which he or she practices medicine. But the license is a general, over-arching permission to practice medicine; the license does not indicate certification in a specialty.
A specialty certificate is issued by a medical specialty certifying board. Board certification in a specialty is based on requirements that the physician have completed an approved educational training program and an evaluation process including an examination designed to assess the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to provide quality patient care in that specialty.
